Mastering the Grid: Your Guide to Playing KENO™ in Massachusetts

If you’ve walked into a local shop or bar lately, you’ve likely seen the glowing digital grids and the 4-minute countdown. That’s KENO™—the Massachusetts State Lottery’s most flexible draw game. If you’re ready to jump in but aren't sure where to start, here is everything you need to know to play like a pro.

1. Pick Your "Spots" In KENO, you are in total control. You start by deciding how many numbers (known as "spots") you want to play. You can choose anywhere from 1 to 12 numbers from a field of 1 to 80.

  • The Pro Move: If you're feeling indecisive, you can always opt for a "Quic Pic" and let the terminal choose random numbers for you.

2. Choose Your Wager KENO™ is built for every budget. You decide how much you want to bet per draw (usually starting at $1). You can also choose to play your numbers for multiple consecutive draws—up to 30—so you don’t have to keep heading back to the counter every four minutes.

3. The Keno Bonus: Want to supercharge your prize? Add the Keno Bonus. By doubling your wager, you gain access to a multiplier (3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x) that is drawn right before the winning numbers. If you win and the multiplier is active, your prize skyrockets. Note: The Bonus is available for most games, excluding the 10, 11, and 12-spot tiers.

4. Watch and Win This is the best part. Every four minutes, 20 winning numbers are drawn and displayed on monitors in real-time. To win, you simply need to match your chosen numbers to the 20 drawn.

The Strategy of Odds What makes KENO unique is that you don’t always have to match all your numbers to win. For example, in a 9-spot game, you can win prizes for matching as few as 4 numbers. Even if you match zero numbers in some higher-spot games, you might still walk away with a small payout!

Whether you’re playing your lucky birthdays or a random string of digits, KENO offers a fast, fun, and flexible way to get in on the action. Just remember to play responsibly and keep an eye on that 4-minute clock!
