The jackpot or Division 1 as it is known available to win in the New Zealand Lotto starts at a minimum of NZD $1 million. Each time there is no Division 1 winner the top prize will rollover to the following draw, however this can only happen four times on a row. If by the fifth draw the jackpot still hasn’t been won then the New Zealand Lotto will have a ‘must be won’ draw, in which if there still isn’t a jackpot winner the Division 1 prize will roll down and be won by the next winning division. About the New Zealand Lotto Draw
The New Zealand Lotto is run by the New Zealand Lottery and the game first launched in July 1987 and the inaugural draw for this lottery game took place on the 1st August 1987.
To participate in this game players must select seven numbers in total from a selection of 1 – 40. Six of these numbers are the main draw numbers and one is the Bonus Ball. The Bonus Ball allows players to win three extra prizes when they match five, four or three of the numbers drawn. To become a jackpot or Division 1 winner in the New Zealand Lotto you must match all six of the main draw numbers. Strike
Strike is an additional game played using the numbers drawn out in the main New Zealand Lotto game. Introduced on the 3rd April 1993 players have the chance to win extra prizes at an additional cost. Strike uses the first four numbers drawn out in the New Zealand Lotto and if players match all of the first four they will win NZD $100,000, known as Strike 4. Each time players do not match the top prize it rolls over to the next draw, increasing in amount, however it can’t rollover more than ten times. Below the top prize there are three remaining prizes and these are:
- Strike 3 - which players have to match any three of the first four numbers to win NZD $800.
- Strike 2 – which players have to match any two of the first four numbers to win NZD $80.
- Strike 1 – players can win a free line of lotto Strike by matching just one of the first four numbers.
Winning Wheel
Winning Wheel was launched in August 2004 and allows all players who buy a lottery ticket for the New Zealand Lotto the chance to win prizes. Each lottery ticket has a 16-digit Winning Wheel number (the same as the ticket serial number) and in every draw one certain number is drawn out. The player who matches this number is then awarded an all-expenses paid trip to the studio in Wellington where they have to spin the wheel to win a prize.
The wheel consists of 30 segments and each one has a different prize available to win. Some segments carry a cash prize ranging from NZD $100,000 to NZD $1 million and some contain items such as shopping trips, cars and a NZD $500,000 house and land package. However, if players do not want to go to the studio they can nominate someone to spin the wheel on their behalf or take the minimum guaranteed prize of NZD $25,000.
