The Mega Sena takes place every week on Wednesday and Saturday night at 9pm (local time) and the numbers are drawn out in Brazil. The actual draw happens slightly differently to other lotteries. Two lottery machines are used which ensures transparency. The first contains numbers from 0 to 5 and then the other from 0 to 9 and one ball from each is picked out at the same time to create each individual number. By doing this every number combination is covered, and if ever 00 was to be drawn out then that is counted as 60.
Mega Sena Draw Information
The Mega Sena is run by the Caixa Economica Federal Bank of Brazil which has been administrating the majority of Brazilian lotteries since the 1960s. The Mega Sena provides money for good causes around Brazil. Lottery proceeds are split, with half given to the running of the lottery and then the other distributed to several social programmes.
In order to play the Mega Sena you have to select six numbers from 1 – 60. If you match all six then you win the jackpot, but other prizes are available to win if you match either four or five numbers. When participating in this lottery game you can choose to play with more than one line, so the more lines you play the greater chance you have of winning, but this will increase of the cost of the ticket. However if you don't want to select your own numbers you can chose to play the Surpresinha which works just like a Lucky Dip.
The Mega Sena lottery operators split the money made from the game into the different lottery prizes. Players can expect to receive 35% for the jackpot prize, 19% for matching five numbers and finally 19% for matching four numbers. In addition to that, 22% is saved for special draws, which occur five times a year, followed by 5%, which is saved for a final end-of-year big lottery game. As with all Brazilian lotteries, Mega Sena winnings are subject to tax and paid out in a lump sum.
